Football fans clash in Greece

2011-09-05 07:26

Athens – One person died and two people were hospitalised with stab wounds after dozens of youths clashed with each other near the Pakritio Stadium in Heraklion on the southern Mediterranean island of Crete early today.

Officials detained four people following the clashes between 30 youths from the OFI Crete football club and Irodotou fans.

Monday’s incident was the latest sign of violence to hit Greek football despite calls from the government and Uefa to crack down on corruption in the sport.

Greece is among several European countries under investigation for match-fixing and betting scandals.

Three people were hospitalised with stab wounds after hundreds of youths attacked the offices of Panathinaikos football club in central Athens last week.

Last month, rioting fans attacked the office of the ruling Socialist Pasok government and clashed with police in the central town on Volos after the team and fellow first division club Kavala were thrown out of all professional league matches over a match-fixing scandal.
