Footballer of the year: what criteria?

2012-06-02 15:16

The PSL Footballer of the Year Award will never cease to amaze me.

It is obvious that the award is only meant to compensate and console the Premiership team and players who finish second best.

Last year, Thulani Serero of Ajax Cape Town won the controversial award, this after Ajax finished as runners-up to Orlando Pirates.

In fact, Pirates’ player Andile Jali was deserving of the prize.

The same trend continued this season with Siyabonga Nomvethe of Moroka Swallows winning the award.

The criteria for this award is that a player will be judged based on his performances in all competitions.

Nomvethe, who only excelled in the league campaign, won the award ahead of Siyabonga Sangweni who helped Pirates win a back-to-back treble – MTN8, Telkom Knockout and the Premiership – and in the process scored crucial goals.

The decision to award Nomvethe was again a blunder by coaches who all diverged from the main selection criteria.
