A gruesome scene greeted Welkom police officers this morning near Ikemisetseng where they found that all the occupants of a car had been shot – leaving four people dead and one critically wounded.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Puleng Motsoeneng said the victims, four females and one male, were shot at while driving from an old mine at St Helena.

Police found a man in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the neck, and a woman in the passenger seat with a gunshot wound to the head.

“Two of the three females in the back were also shot in the head and the third one, who was sitting in the middle, sustained two firearm wounds to the left shoulder and face,” Motsoeneng said.

“It is alleged that the victims were selling food to the zama-zamas (illegal miners) when the incident occurred,” she said.

Motsoeneng said the victims are allegedly from Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

All four victims were already dead at the scene. The fifth victim has been taken to hospital and is in a critical condition.

“Police found nine 9mm cartridges and two projectiles on the scene and a 9mm pistol, with no serial number, was also found in the possession of the driver.”

The four deceased have not yet being identified.
