Four held for taxi violence

2010-10-15 11:41

Four people were arrested, two commuters injured, two taxis set alight, and a driver wounded during violent clashes between two rival taxi associations in Wierdabrug, Gauteng police said today.

The violence started yesterday morning and police were still monitoring today, said Captain Katlego Mogale.

Two commuters were slightly injured when members of both associations stoned each other’s taxis.

“The police brought the violence under control and everything went back to normal during the day,” said Mogale.

“In the afternoon just after the peak hour started, the two rival associations were back at it again,” he said.

Two empty taxis were set alight and another taxi was shot at on the R55 to Laudium. The driver was wounded and taken to hospital.

Four people were arrested for malicious damage to property and were expected to appear in court soon.

“The police are still on the scene and keeping the situation under control,” said Mogale.

Meanwhile, the leadership of both associations were in a meeting with police on Friday to try and resolve the problem.

The names of the associations were not provided but Mogale said both operated around the Reds shopping centre.
