Four strangled, hanged in Empangeni – cops bring in task team

2011-05-16 15:26

A special task team has been deployed to investigate the killing of four people whose bodies were found tied up and hanging from rope outside a flat in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said provincial commissioner Mammonye Ngobeni had condemned the killing of Soneni Mtshali (32), Zandile Zungu (46) and her two sons, Mthokozisi (26) and Ayanda (22).

The four were found dead on Friday night.

Mdunge said the motives for the killings were not known.

“The investigation will leave no stone unturned. We are still waiting for postmortem which will reveal their cause of death but we believe that these people were strangled and then hanged,” said Mdunge.

Zandile Zungu owned a catering company and is related to Chief Zungu of Empangeni.Mtshali and the Zungu family’s bodies were found in their second floor room by a passerby who alerted the police.

Mtshali, from Endlangubo, worked as a hairdresser at Jimmy’s salon at Empangeni and was a Zungu family friend for over five years.

She used to stay with them before she moved to her own flat.

Her aunt, Lindiwe Mtshali, believes Soneni was not the target.

“Soneni used to live with MaZungu five years ago. She would go back to the flat just for a visit. It was not her that they wanted,” said Mtshali.

Mtshali described Soneni as a very warm and down to earth person.

“It is so unlikely that she was the target. No one ever fought with her because she hardly talks to people, except when necessary. This has caused the family so much pain. She didn’t deserve to die like this,” she said.
