Free State pupils arrested

2010-09-17 15:09

Forty-two pupils have been arrested over the past two days in Botshabelo, east of Bloemfontein, during protests against writing preliminary exams, Free State police have said.

Twenty-six were arrested today when protests continued outside the Senakangwedi and Reamohetse secondary schools in Section E of Botshabelo, spokesperson Constable Consolation Mokoale said.

Seven of these were minors and were released.

“The remaining 19 will be kept in the holding cells over the weekend and will appear in court on Monday.”

Sixteen students were arrested yesterday after they threw stones at police when they arrived at the Ntemoseng Secondary School.

“We were called out to attend the scene and by the time we arrived there were about 200 learners toyi-toying outside the school. We tried to disperse them and they fought back by throwing stones at police.

“Police managed to arrest 16 of them. They appeared in court this morning and were released on a warning.”

The National Congress of School Governing Bodies has condemned the disruption of preliminary exams in Botshabelo. Its president Monokoane Hlobo appealed to all pupils to go back to school from Monday.
