French police make arrests in Islamist crackdown

2012-04-04 13:54

Raids around France have netted 10 people suspected of ties to radical Islamist websites, according to a French official.

It’s the second time in several days that police have conducted such sweeps.

They come after a killing spree in southwestern France that authorities have blamed on a young French Muslim radical.

But the official, who is close to the investigation, said today’s early morning arrests were not connected to the Toulouse killings or to the members of a banned group arrested last week.

The official said the 10 are suspected of links to Islamist websites and of threatening violence in online forums.

Some of them may have been trying to attend jihadist training camps along the Afghan-Pakistan border.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing policy.
