Fuel shortage in Gauteng: Shell

2011-12-19 14:37

Shell petrol stations around Gauteng are expected to run dry of certain grades of fuel this week.

“Currently a high number of Shell’s retail sites in Gauteng have already stocked-out on certain fuel grades, with most expected to run dry by tomorrow,” said communications manager Elton Fortuin.

The fuel constraints were due to “production issues at a third party inland refinery and more recently the shut down of our Alberton fuel depot”.

The fuel depot was shut down for safety reasons on Friday evening after a fuel leak at the site.

“While the leak was immediately isolated, the depot will remain shut down until it is deemed safe to resume operations,” said Fortuin.

“We have activated our contingency measures to minimise disruptions to fuel supply. However the depot shutdown has significantly affected fuel deliveries in Gauteng,” he said.

The company was aiming to have normal fuel supply restored later in the week.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our retailers and the public,” said Fortuin.
