Fugitive nabbed after shoot-out

A wanted man and three of his accomplices were arrested after a shoot-out with the police near Giyani yesterday, Limpopo police said.

Police were tipped off about a possible armed robbery at a hardware shop in Giyani and were on the lookout for the robbers’ car, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

He said they gave chase when they saw it on the Malamulele-Giyani road, and ordered the driver to pull over, but he sped away.

There was a shoot-out in which three of the robbers were wounded. The fourth was not hurt and was arrested.

Mulaudzi said one of the men, who was believed to have masterminded the foiled robbery, had been linked to 60 crimes including murders, rapes, house robberies and business robberies.

“The man had been on the run since he escaped from police custody in Vuwani in February last year,” he said.

Mulaudzi said police confiscated two cars and two 9mm pistols. One of them was a police-issued firearm. The serial number on the other had been filed off.

The men would appear in the Malamulele Magistrates Court on Monday.
