Fun & Glamour

Carol Bouwer – an executive producer of talk show Motswako the Mix

Wife, mother, socialite and businesswoman, Bouwer wears her many

hats with grace and dignity.

But juggling such a demanding jet-set lifestyle –

she commutes between Australia where she lives with her husband and son, and

South Africa where her business is based – must be demanding, to say the

“Firstly, come festive season and I lose the hair extensions!

Holidays are about food, books and walking for me, not blow-drying your bought

hair to death,” says Bouwer, who will be celebrating her 10th wedding

anniversary in 2010.

“I spend a lot of time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I have a

holiday apartment. I have yet to find better cooking than you’ll find there. The

first thing we do is order nasi goreng (fried rice) and maybe some laksa (a

noodle dish) and make promises about hitting the gym the moment we get back to

This festive period is going to be a rather poignant one for

Bouwer, whose grandmother – whom she used to visit in Taung, North West, during

holidays – passed away last year.

“I visited her as much as I could, but now that she has passed away

I guess no more long chats over lamb roast for me. She was a remarkable

At least there is still her mother, Ann, who she says is one of her

favourite people with whom to go on holiday.

“My mum is also fun. I remember her greeting Brian Lara on Bond

Street in London and being all familiar with him. She mistook him for a boy who

grew up with me in Rockville, Soweto. Eventually, being the cricket fan that she

is, while watching the news at night and seeing his face on screen it dawned on

her what she’d done!”

When with mum, Bouwer shops. But with “my boys (husband) Edward

and (son) Dante” they are a bit more adventurous.

“We walk, shop, ride, read, write and explore, and of course Dante

ensures there’s lots of swimming – hence, lose the extensions,” she says.

Bouwer says the Gold Coast in Australia is definitely a difficult

place to beat when it comes to favourite holiday destinations – it’s fun for

kids and has a bit of glamour for adults at night.

“My son enjoys the rides at Dream World as well as the slides at

Water World; it beats Wild Wadi in Dubai by a mile.

“Australia has such a bad rap in South Africa because of ‘you know

what’, but if you know where to go, it is a dream vacation destination.

“For the bling brigade there’s the Palazzo Hotel, which is

Versace-themed throughout. Very BEE,” says Bouwer with a twinkling smile.

This well-travelled beauty says she loves the architecture in

Prague in the Czech Republic and “the theatre is sensational”, but all her

senses go into overdrive in Amsterdam, Holland.

“From dinner at Ciel Bleu to seeing the works of the old masters at

the Rijksmuseum, to spotting more than a few unmentionables as you walk the

streets. It also helps that my in-laws are around the corner in Wageningen, so –

free babysitting.”
