Gallery thieves ignore valuable art, try to steal projector

2013-05-28 08:43

Wellington – Thieves who broke into an Auckland art gallery ignored valuable works by national and international artists and instead tried to steal a projector.

The thieves failed late yesterday to remove the projector, which was fixed to the ceiling, according to a statement by Auckland council, which owns the gallery.

“Fortunately the wall fixings held strong and the thieves made away with nothing to show for their efforts,” said the coordinator of the Fresh Gallery, Nicole Lim.

“We are very thankful the thieves didn’t damage any of the artwork or ruin the art installations,” she said.

The gallery in South Auckland is involved in the 5th Auckland Triennial, which includes work by more than 35 New Zealand and international artists, collectives and architects.

Lim said the break-in caused minimal damage and the gallery was open as usual today.
