Games officials into damage control

2010-10-06 07:22

New Delhi – Commonwealth Games officials are grappling with reports of poor ticket sales and sagging international television ratings.

These reports throw into question the event’s relevance as a major international sporting competition.

President of the Commonwealth Games Federation Mike Fennell said urgent repairs to the track at the main stadium had been completed and it was “all systems go” for the start of the athletics competition later today.

Suresh Kalmadi, chairperson of the local organising committee, reported that an additional 5?000 tickets had been sold yesterday.

He said faulty scales at the boxing competition that forced some boxers to needlessly drop weight had been checked, and “all 10 were found to be OK”.
