Five men alleged to be behind a string of crimes in Cofimvaba have appeared in the local magistrates’ court, said Eastern Cape police.

Warrant officer Namhla Mdleleni said the suspects attacked an 81-year-old woman in her home in Ndungwana section on Friday night.

“They allegedly demanded money before raping and killing her,” said Mdleleni.

The group then proceeded to Qutusa where they attempted to rob and kill a tavern owner. They failed.

“They then kidnapped a 23-year-old woman who they raped and also killed,” said Mdleleni.

Police arrested four of the suspects on Saturday in Cofimvaba. A fifth suspect was arrested in Cape Town.

The group appeared in the Cofimvaba Magistrates’ Court today where they faced charges of attempted murder, murder, kidnapping, robbery, and rape.

“The case was postponed to July 19 for a formal bail application,” said Mdleleni.
