The 25-year-old man arrested for the murder of KwaZulu-Natal businessman Nhlanhla Gasa is now working with police to reconstruct the brutal attack, which occurred last month.

The man was scheduled to appear at the Durban Magistrates’ Court today on a charge of murder with aggravating circumstances.

However, he will only be appearing tomorrow after he agreed to co-operate with police. The man was nabbed in a room he was renting in Groutville on the north coast of KZN yesterday.

He was with his girlfriend and two children at the time.

The police’s Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the man would point out the crime scene ahead of his appearance.

The man is believed to have been hiding out in the Eastern Cape.

Gasa, who is a former Transnet executive and Umgeni board chairperson among other things, is believed to have been stabbed repeatedly at his up-market Umhlanga home before his body was dumped at the Tugela River.

His Jaguar was set alight and found several metres from where his body was.

“The police have always known who he is but he has been in hibernation,” said Mdunge. “He emerged back in the province last Thursday,” he told City Press.

The man, who started to rent the room on the day of his arrest, was cornered by the provincial task team, which was set up by the provincial commissioner, together with the Durban K9 and crime units.
