Gauteng North on track in netball championships

Gauteng North are on track to defend the Spar National Netball Championship title after outplaying Western Province 60-29.

The championships at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town end on Saturday.

Gauteng North, who earned a bye after their opponents, Gauteng Central, pulled out of the tournament at the eleventh hour, are yet to lose a match.

The defending champions beat Griqualand West 61-27 in the first match on Monday.

They defeated Western Province yesterday.

However, Gauteng North coach Elize Kotze is wary of getting too carried away.

“We have not yet qualified for the finals. We take each and every match as a final. Our main target is to go to the final and successfully defend the title,” she said.Kotze said their goalkeeper, Vanes-Marie du Toit, was outstanding, picking off interceptions and controlled her ball passing well.

The Pretoria-based side will take on Nelson Bay in their last pool match today.Meanwhile, the Free State’s Motheo have emerged as one of the tournament’s favourites after they managed to win all their games.

Today, the Free State side beat Boland 41-28 in their third match.

They won their first match against Gauteng West 63-20 and went on to overcome Kenneth Kaunda 48-27 in the second encounter.

FS Motheo will meet Ekurhuleni in their last pool match today.

Other results Ekurhuleni narrowly beat Kenneth Kaunda 45-40, andNelson Mandela Bay thrashed Griqualand West 53-19.
