Gauteng festive games launched

2010-12-15 15:24

The Gauteng department of sports has launched the province’s festive community games.A host of festive soccer tournaments will kick off across the townships in the province tomorrow.

The line-up includes the already established games like the Godfrey Moloi Games in Soweto, Philly’s Games in Tembisa, Pollen Ndlanya Games in Daveyton, Diski Nine Nine in Vosloorus and KwaMahlobo Games in Soweto – among others.

The department said their involvement was to consolidate the tradition-steeped events, most of which most close at the end of the month.

MEC for sports Lebogang Maile commended the founders of the games, but warned that his department would not sponsor any event as such gesture would “enrich a few individuals”.

“We are not trying to re-invent these games, but would like to see them becoming bigger and better.

We are not going to inject cash but we are here to assist with the necessary resources,” said Maile at the launch at Ellis Park in Johannesburg today.

He added: “We hope the tournaments will in future include other codes.

And most importantly, we need the involvement of the legends.”

Maile later handed over soccer equipment and trophies to the games’ various organisers.

The soccer kits and trophies will be awarded to the finalists in each tournament.

Among the recipients were former Bafana Bafana striker Ndlanya (Pollen Ndlanya Games), Mathebula (Philly’s Games) and Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe (Tshwane Games).
