Gauteng motorists owe R3bn in traffic fines

Gauteng motorists owe more than R3 billion in traffic fines.

These were part of seven million infringement notices issued in the past financial year, The New Age reported today.

Both Joburg and Tshwane’s traffic departments have been stripped of their powers to collect fines.

“We don’t collect fines any more. They are collected by the Road Traffic Infringement Agency and we don’t depend on a single cent of traffic fines,” Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar told the daily newspaper.

“We get our own budget every year.”
