Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi has announced a special task team for a 25-year Integrated Transport Master Plan.

The Steering Committee, as it is called, will comprise transport planning experts, academics and specialists who will assist in the investigation and development of the master plan.

It has been budgeted for in the 2011/2012 financial year. An initial R15 million has been allocated for this project in the current financial year.

The committee had its first meeting this morning at the Derek Masoek Conference Centre in Johannesburg.

The MEC expects the plan to be presented for approval on or before March 31 2013 and a short-term, five-year implementation plan by January 31 2013.

The purpose of the committee is “to regulate, plan and develop an efficient and integrated transport system that serves the public interest by enhancing mobility and delivering safe, secure and environmentally responsible road-based public and private transport, and air and rail services,” said Vadi.

The vision of the master plan, he added is to “promote Gauteng as the economic powerhouse of Southern Africa; stimulate sustainable long-term economic growth; and promote skills development and the creation of employment.”

The team will report back on a quarterly basis on the progress of the project.
