Gavin’s league success puts him in the running

2012-06-09 20:26

Those calling for Gavin Hunt to be appointed Bafana Bafana coach are not far off the mark, as he has won three consecutive league titles with SuperSport United.

He has a rather impressive CV to lay a serious claim to the top job. United have won four trophies (three league titles and the Nedbank Cup last month) under his tutelage over the past five seasons. Since his days at Black Leopards in 2002, Hunt has won the coach of the year four times.

To his credit, Hunt has been able to get the best out of players who are prepared to go all out for him. His detractors argue that he plays direct soccer, but it is that type of football that has distinguished him from other mentors.

Although at national team level he won’t be able to buy “big animals” like Mame Niang and will have to do his best with what the nation has, he still has the ability to fine-tune players to do what he wants.

International football is more about getting results and less about the style of play, and he has put this theory to good use during his time at SuperSport.

He surprised everybody when he played striker Glen Salmon at centre-back and the former striker excelled in his new role.

He has also given Kermit Erasmus, one of the shortest players in the league, a chance at United. Erasmus grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Hunt might not be number one on the list of potential coaches, but he has what it takes to lead the national team.
