Gayle’s tips for parents

2011-11-11 13:02

1. Read the label. If it’s got more than five ingredients, it’s not food.

If the words look made up, so is the stuff in the bottle.

Anything with an “ose” on the end of it is sugar.

2. Go green, red, yellow. Make sure that every plate of food is a riot of colour, not just beige carbs.

I have a plate with five different compartments and I try to put a different-coloured food in every one.

3. Location, location, location. Teach children where their food comes from so they don’t think everything comes from a plastic bag or a tin.

4. You can’t eat it if you don’t buy it.

If you don’t want your child to eat chocolate, don’t keep it in the house.

If you don’t want them to drink teeth-rotting fruit juice and fizzy drinks, don’t buy them.

5. Offer non-food rewards. Don’t reward you child with sweets or chips, rather offer them blowing bubbles, balloons, stickers and day trips to the zoo or the park for a picnic.
