Gender commission condemns ‘sex-for-marks’ incident

The Commission for Gender Equality has condemned an alleged “sex-for-marks” incident at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus.

“The said allegations are of concern and require immediate action,” spokesperson Javu Baloyi said today.

A third-year student alleged that a lecturer at the university refused to release her marks unless she had sex with him.

The matter was initially raised with the public protector, who referred the matter to the commission, said spokesperson Oupa Segale.

Baloyi said the student had laid a formal complaint with the commission, alleging gross sexual harassment.

He said the commission was “dedicated to ensuring that institutions of higher learning are free from gender oppression”.?
