German coach picks Spain for Cup

2010-07-08 08:40

German coach Joachim Loew has tipped Spain as champions of the 2010

Fifa World Cup.

This is after the reigning European champions beat his side 1-0 in

the semi-final, setting up an encounter against the Netherlands who overcame

Uruguay 3-2 in the other semi-final in Cape Town on Tuesday night.

“They are currently the best team in the world,” he said. “They

will win this tournament.”

Loew said Spain had actually been playing the best football for the

last three years.

“Today they outplayed us and deserved to win.

kept the ball so

well that it was difficult for us to string a few passes and this is how they

have been playing and overcoming the opposition,” he said.

Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque said: “This victory should not go

into the players’ heads though as there is still a final to play.”

He said he and his players would do their best to achieve what had

eluded Spain since the World Cup started – win it.

Whoever win on Sunday, there will be a new name on the trophy as

Spain and the Netherlands are two great football playing nations but have both

failed where it mattered the most.

The winner will also make history by becoming the first European

country to win the cup outside their continent.

Prior to this World Cup finals, five-time world champions, Brazil,

held the distinction of being the only country to have one the trophy in three

different continents outside theirs, these being Europe, North America and Asia.
