Germany, you beauty!

2010-07-03 20:58

What a magnificent, sensational and

classy victory for Germany as they strolled to the semifinal of the 2010 World

Cup with a 4-0 drubbing of Argentina this afternoon.

This was no ordinary beating – it was a massive destruction of

note and Joachim Loew’s side deserves all the accolades after they sent Diego

Maradona’s side back home.

This was the third game in which Germany scored four goals in this

World Cup and they should now be favourites to lift the trophy next

Two goals from Miroslav Klose and one each from Arne Friedrich and

Thomas Müller saw Argentina suffer their first and only defeat at this World

Klose has now scored 14 goals in World Cup finals and with this

form he could easily beat Ronaldo’s record 15-goal haul.

Before this game Maradona had proclaimed that God wanted Argentina

to be in the final – but there were no signs of them wanting to be there as they

fell to Müller’s fourth-minute goal.

The 20-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder was the quickest to react

to Bastian Schweinsteiger’s free kick and headed home past Sergio Romero.

Germany could not have asked for a better start than this as they

caught the South Americans off guard.

And it could have been more had they not squandered the endless

chances they created as they stretched Argentina’s defence to the limit.

Just as they did when they beat England 4-1 last week, Germany

relied on their counters and they mastered them with a precision which left

Maradona bemused.

Klose should have added the second one in the 23rd minute, but

ballooned his effort with Argentinian defenders at bay. But he atoned for this

miss with easy goals in the 68th and 89th minutes to give Germany a resounding

victory over their nemesis.

On the other side, Lionel Messi was too quiet by his standards as

he struggled to combine with his fellow strikers Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo

Messi has now gone the same way as Kaká and Cristiano Ronaldo, also

failing to live up to expectations.

Germany played a tactical game, defending in numbers and giving

little at the back, and this frustrated their opponents.

With Argentina deploying three strikers, it left a hole in the

middle of the park and the Germans were good at exploiting that area to launch

most of their attacks.

This was Argentina’s first real test in the tournament after

strolling all the way to this point, but they failed to read the warning signs

early on and they were made to pay for that.
