Ghana gives sports minister the boot after World Cup debacle

2014-06-28 14:49

Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s president has removed the minister of sports and his deputy from their positions in the wake of the country’s poor performance at the World Cup.

President John Mahama gave no reason for the order, but it comes after the team finished bottom of their group.

The Black Stars failed to win a single game with players going on strike over unpaid fees and star forwards Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng indefinitely suspended for insubordination.

Ghana advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah is now a minister of state with his deputy Joseph Yammin taking up a regional minister position in Ashanti.

Ghana’s World Cup ended on Thursday after a 2-1 loss to Portugal.
