‘Giant’ piranha caught in lake

2011-05-16 12:53

A Russian fisherman hooked more than he bargained for when he hauled in a piranha tipping the scales at 2.4kg, according to news reports.

The fish likely escaped from a local collector, as piranhas normally weigh a kilogram or less, the Interfax news agency reported today.

The south Russian news agency Novosti Life identified Stanislav Chukunov, a sports fisherman and resident of the southern town of Bataisk, as the owner of the catch.

The fish was taken in the Solenoe More lake, in Russia’s Kuban region. Chukunov reportedly turned the piranha over to local ichthyologists for study.

The Bataisk city government is studying the possible closure of the Solenoe More if researchers find more piranha in the lake, which is popular with local bathers, the town said on its website.

Exotic pets enjoy some popularity in Russia’s outlying provinces, particularly animals thought to be dangerous, such as poisonous snakes.

The piranha caught in Solonoe More lake probably lived in an aquarium for two to three years before being released, marine biologist Yury Rekov told Novosti Life.
