Girl (18) gives birth to conjoined twins

2012-02-01 14:13

An 18-year-old girl from Mpumalanga has given birth to conjoined twins.

Bongi Sibuyi of Justicia village gave birth early this morning at the Matikwana hospital.

The twins, whose sex is unknown as they are joined from the pelvis, are reported to be healthy.

Sibuyi is also reportedly doing well.

Provincial department spokesperson Dumisani Mlangeni said the twins have been transferred to the Pretoria Academic hospital for care and advice on how they should be separated.

“Sibuyi had a natural birth with no complications. The twins are healthy and their combined weight is 4.68kg. We do not know what their sex is at this moment as their genitals cannot be seen,” Mlangeni said.

Conjoined twins result from incomplete division of the embryonic disk. The incidence is estimated at about 1 in 250 000 live births.

A number of conjoined twins were born in South Africa in recent years. These include:

» In 2010 a 15-year-old girl gave birth to conjoined twins at the Klerksdorp Hospital. The babies were joined from the chest to the abdomen;

» In 2009 a mother gave birth to conjoined twins at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital;

» East Rand twins Daniella and Danika Lowton were successfully separated in 2007;

» In 2006, a 30-year-old woman gave birth to conjoined twins at Chris Hani Baragwanath with complex thoracic and abdominal structures, including a horseshoe kidney.

In 1986, famous twins Mpho and Mphonyana Mathibela were born at Chris Hani Baragwanath.

The pair was joined at the head.
