Political satirist and comedian Jon Stewart has defended Trevor Noah against the social media attacks he’s endured since he was announced as the next host of the news spoof show The Daily Show.

“I think, without hesitation, Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect … or not, just as I earned your respect … or did not,” said Stewart after returning from his week-long break from the show.

He reportedly went on to say in a typical “two-way street” that viewers must “give him an opportunity to earn that trust and respect”.

Noah earned the love and ire of fans and foes when he was unveiled as Stewart’s replacement. His Twitter followers began to retweet his old posts, which painted him as an anti-Semite and sexist. Foes called for him to be fired, while friends defended him against accusations of racism, citing his mixed race background.

Noah’s response last week was: “To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian.”

Another tweet from Noah, which has since been deleted, said: “Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter.”

Some of the tweets quoted as reason for Noah to be fired from his biggest break, were as old as 2012.
