Give us jobs

2011-10-29 17:11

As darkness fell on the JSE in Sandton on Thursday, Rendani Nematswerani sat quietly with his head gently pressed against the imposing steel fence to get some rest after a long day of marching.

Nematswerani (24) travelled through the night from Venda in Limpopo to arrive in Johannesburg at 6am.

“I came here without any pocket money and I have not eaten since this morning, but because I love this organisation so much, I don’t mind,” he said.

The final-year engineering student, like his peers in the march organised by the ANC Youth League, came to voice his concerns about the high unemployment rate.

Not far from where Nematswerani was resting sat Thembela Katise (29). She had her legs in a pond.

“Shoo, I am very tired, but it has been worth it because I am here to fight for jobs,” said Katise.

Katise has a degree in Business Administration, but the only job she has been able to find is contract work, which only lasts for six months.

“I have been looking for a job for the past three years without success. That is why I am here today,” she said.

She hoped the march would create awareness around the need for jobs.
