Criminal charges have been laid against former president Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla, over the alleged illegal exhumation of the remains of three of his grandfather’s children.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela confirmed to The Herald that a charge of desecration of a grave was being investigated after a case had been opened at the Bityi police station.

This comes after Mandla had allegedly moved the remains of three of Nelson Mandela’s children, Makgatho, Thembekile and Makaziwe, from Qunu to Mvezo.

A relative told Lubabalo Ngcukana the family initially gave Mandla the benefit of the doubt when the news spread that the remains were no longer in Qunu.

“It was a big shock to them, that is why they want to make him pay ... the gloves are off.”
