Go-ahead for Neo-Nazi chimney sweep

2010-04-29 16:44

A German court has ruled that a district chimney sweep was

perfectly able to engage in his profession despite holding right-wing extremist

political views.

The man had sued the local authorities in Halle, in eastern

Germany, because they had tried to remove him from his official chimney sweep

district on account of his political orientation, Volker Albrecht, the vice

president of the Halle administrative court said.

The sweep, not named for legal reasons, was a prominent local

member of the National Democratic Party, a far-right outfit that is monitored

closely by the federal authorities.

The court, however, ruled that the man’s outlook had no bearing on

his ability to clean chimneys, check heating oil installations or the other

duties that such professionals in Germany carry out – such as turning up at

weddings to confer good luck on the newlyweds.
