Former Bafana Bafana defender and captain Neil Tovey (52) says he’s happy and lucky to be alive.

“I’m feeling much better today. I’m happy that God gave me a second chance,” said a tired-sounding Tovey in a telephonic conversation with City Press from a Durban hospital, adding that he was in good hands.

KickOFF reported on Tuesday that Tovey had suffered three heart attacks. According to the magazine, Tovey was in intensive care after being resuscitated several times.

The football legend said he was playing squash on Tuesday morning when the attacks occurred.

“I felt dizzy and started sweating. I decided to stop and drove home. But when I got home my wife noticed I wasn’t myself. She rushed me to hospital,” explained Tovey.

Meanwhile, his former teammate John “Shoes” Moshoeu (49) was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

Sunday Sun reported that he was in a critical condition from an undisclosed illness.

On Tuesday, Moshoeu was rumoured to have died on social media. However, sports anchor Robert Marawa set the record straight on his Metro FM show. Marawa said Moshoeu’s mother was pained by the rumours.

“I have spoken to his mother and she said to me they aren’t asking anybody for a cent but all they are asking for is South Africans’ prayers,” said Marawa.
