God is not the law

Mondli Makhanya’s column (“A meeting of church and state”, City Press, June 8 2014) makes a weak case in defending Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.

It suggests one religion should be above others. But I see no compelling reason religion should be factored into the legislating process in South Africa.

We have a secular state and that makes it difficult or near impossible to balance the different interest groups and their beliefs.

There are no clear texts to suggest any religion could be the saviour for our social ills and the other troubles that have engulfed our country.

Makhanya’s attack on those opposing the chief justice’s comments are misplaced. Mogoeng was clearly out of line and there should be no shame in calling him to order.
