Going against the grain - Renault Kangoo

2012-05-18 11:52

For someone who has driven sedans all his life, I enjoyed my disguise as the delivery guy, the plumber or a Mr Fix-It –
or whatever comes to mind when you see a white panel van.

One thing that impressed me about the Kangoo is how spacious it is.

It has a large windscreen and the dashboard has many useful compartments.

The space at the back is also generous and can load a team of rugby players – okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but the point is should you need to transport stuff, this is the car.

It’s great to ferry large groceries, utensils and catering equipment, and with the rubber floor, the grip is quite firm, and you don’t have to worry about spills and violent movement of things.

It has signature Renault features such as the mammoth handbrake lever, which I initially mistook for a hand rest.

While it is a basic industrious car, the Kangoo is an easy drive and has modern comforts such as power steering.

But it’s not made for a great take off. In fact, the horsepower is non-existent.

It handles the road well and is balanced. I never had a doubt that I might topple over though.

Yes, it is used as a delivery workhorse, but there’s nothing stopping you from zipping to church, work or the Sunday picnic.

It comes in handy as a second or third car for running errands, and for going incognito in the city.

It’s not a babe magnet, so don’t expect to get too many stares in this one. Nevertheless, it is fun to drive.
