Going against the grain: The green car

2012-05-18 10:58

With a litre of petrol nearing R13, the future certainly looks green.

Although the Joule project – what would have been South Africa’s first electric car – has been shelved, there is a variety of hybrid cars to choose from on the South African market.

There’s the bland Toyota Prius and the Honda CR-Z, but I prefer Toyota’s Auris HSD. You’d never know the Auris HSD is a half electric and half pertol car.

It’s so quiet. I kept checking if the car was actually on and then accidentally turned it off in the process. You can’t even hear it idle.

And just because it’s green, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on power. The Auris HSD is powered by a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine in conjunction with an electric motor.

It makes the 0-100km dash in 11.4 seconds and goes as fast as 180km/h.

The compact 1.8 Atkinson cycle (electric) engine, together with the cooling exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, reduces exhaust energy losses and converts combustion energy into engine power.

The EGR system reduces cooling loss and this improves fuel efficiency.

I liked the reverse camera integrated into the rear-view mirror.
