Golf day raises more than R29m for ANC

Gauteng ANC leaders have raised more than R29 million for the party’s 2014 national elections war chest at a single golf day.

Held at the Killarney Golf Course in Joburg last Friday, the event was so packed that many business people who wanted to attend were turned away.

ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize apologised to them and promised to use a bigger golf course next year.

Those who attended the gala dinner and fundraising auction – including businessmen Popo Molefe and Siphiwe Nyanda, and party veteran Andrew Mlangeni – bid for exclusive wine and paintings by artist Rob Kearney.

The first item on sale was a portrait of struggle hero Chris Hani, which sold for R60 000. A portrait of a sitting Nelson Mandela fetched R40 000, while another portrait of a younger Madiba was bought for R55 000.

But a painting of a smiling President Jacob Zuma appeared to be the most popular, selling for R100 000.

A set of two bottles of Nelson Mandela wines, produced by a Stellenbosch winery to mark the elder statesman’s 95th birthday, was sold for R151 000, while a case of 12 bottles sold for R160 000.

At the end of the auction, Gauteng ANC chairperson Paul Mashatile told the guests that they raised R26.5 million in pledges and table sales. “Next year, I want R50 million.”

City Press has learnt that R29 million was raised from the event.

Mashatile went further to urge guests to vote for the governing ANC next year.

“I don’t want people to go and say we won’t vote for the ANC because they don’t give us business,” he said. “Tell us if you want business. The only thing is that when we give you business, you must deliver.”

Mkhize told the guests that their success was part of the party’s success in creating a 10 million-strong black middle class over the past 20 years.

“This time around, we don’t expect you to go to jail, we don’t expect you to go to exile, we don’t expect you to have your house burnt down,” he said.

“We expect you to succeed and as you succeed, all the ANC says is, make the ANC part of your success.”

He would not confirm the amount raised, but said there was a lot of enthusiasm from ANC leaders to extend the golfing event to other provinces.
