Good marks for Of Good Report at the Saftas

The Film and Publication Board might have hated it, but Of Good Report picked up seven awards at the SA Film and Television Awards (Safta) last night, capping a great week for director Jahmil X.T. Qubeka.

Qubeka’s film, which was briefly and controversially banned during last year’s Durban International Film Festival, this week earned 13 nominations at the 10th African Movie Academy Awards (Amaas).

The movie, which focuses on the sordid affair between a teacher and a pupil, picked up most of the awards in the feature film category at last night’s Saftas at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Joburg.

It took home the best feature film award and six others, including best actor and best supporting actors.

Qubeka was also presented with the best director award for the feature film.

The movie recently opened the 22nd annual Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles and has been screened at festivals in London, Dubai, Glasgow and Chicago.

At the Amaas, it was nominated for best film, best director, achievement in production design, sound effects and soundtrack, best young and promising actor, best supporting roles and all the lead roles.

Qubeka said yesterday: “The affirmation is priceless. Even though the film has been very well received all across Europe, Asia and North America, recognition from one’s own home and people is truly special.

“To know that the film has resonated with my contemporaries across the continent is truly special indeed.”

Other South African films to crack the nod for the Amaas are Andrew Mudge’s The Forgotten Kingdom, which received nine nominations and Roberta Durrant’s Felix, which got eight nods.

Some of the other major Safta winners last night were:
