Gordhan, Shabangu to meet with mining companies

2013-05-24 13:38

Ministers of finance Pravin Gordhan and mining Susan Shabangu will meet with leaders of mining companies, the Chamber of Mines has said.

“The ministers will meet with CEOs and leaders of the gold and platinum mining companies,” chamber executive Vusi Mabena said today.

He could not provide the meeting’s agenda as it had been arranged on short notice.

Beeld newspaper reported that unrest in the mining industry ahead of wage negotiations would be discussed. It reported that chief executives from AngloGold Ashanti, Sibanye Gold, Harmony, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), Impala Platinum, and Lonmin would attend.

The chamber said on Monday it would meet unions to discuss proposed wage demands for 2013.

“The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) tabled a wage demand... [last] Friday,” the chamber’s employment relations senior executive Elize Strydom said.

“We have circulated the demands to our members in the gold and coal [mining] sector. The next step will be to engage the unions.”

NUM demanded that surface workers receive a minimum amount of R7 000 a month, and underground and open-cast workers R8 000 a month.

For all other categories, the union had put forward a demand of a 15% increase.

Amplats announced earlier this month it would cut 6?000 jobs instead of the 14?000 it predicted earlier. Trade unions responded with renewed threats of strikes.
