Government has come up with a twelve-point plan to create jobs.

According to Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Collins Chabane, the Cabinet decided to fast-track interventions that will help create employment.

“President Jacob Zuma emphasised the need for all to move away from perpetual planning to visible action that will respond to the needs of the people,” said Chabane.

Government intends to:
» Expand the community works programme to 1 million positions by 2014

» Set up an infrastructure commission to ensure adequate investments on infrastructure

» Deal with monopolistic practices that limit or deter the entry of new enterprises;» Intervene to increase competitiveness

» Promote small businesses

» Expand rural development programmes

» Install 1 million solar water heaters by 2014

» Reduce steel prices by the end of September

» Develop the skills of public servants

» Improve the management of the tendering process

» Operate Post Bank as a registered bank

» Make trade easier with other African countries by removing obstacles.

“President Zuma welcomed the commitment of the executive to ensure that the projects identified are implemented without delay, within agreed time frames,” said Chabane.

Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel said Zuma and the Cabinet had expressed concern with poor spending on infrastructure.

He said government had spent only 9.1% of the country’s GDP on infrastructure.

This figure is set to decrease to 8.1% in two years’ time.
