Govt must fight gay, lesbian bashing – Cosatu

2012-09-19 17:43

Cosatu wants government to fight gay and lesbian bashing rather than just talking about it.

In its resolutions, which were debated during the third day of its congress in Midrand today, Cosatu said the National Hate Crimes Task Team set up by government should be “properly funded” and become “a campaign body and not just a talk shop”.

It also said Cosatu should have a strategy and campaign document to ensure members are not scared to declare their sexual orientation.

There was also an extensive debate about the merger of unions that operate in the same sectors, with the National Union of Mineworkers complaining that workers could not be “channelled like water” from one union to another.

The NUM has members in Eskom which some unions are saying should join the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa), which also organises in Eskom.

According to the resolution Cosatu should stop talking about merging unions, except where merger talks were already under way.

The labour federation also wants a review of the Gatherings Act, which poses a threat to unions’ right to strike, and it would explore the setting up of a strike and solidarity fund, to compensate workers when they go on strike.
