Gran kills son, grandson, attempts suicide

A grandmother has shot dead her 30-year-old son and killed her two-year-old grandson before trying to commit suicide in Centurion, Gauteng police said today.

Captain Thomas Mufamadi said the man was shot in the head while the cause of the toddler’s death was not yet known.

The grandmother was taken to hospital after trying to kill herself yesterday.

Mufamadi said he did not know how she tried to commit suicide, or how the two-year-old died.

Beeld newspaper reported that the woman, who lived in the Valley View security complex in Kosmosdal at Samrand, had slit her wrists and tried to hang herself.

A security guard in the complex found her after he went to investigate a gunshot on Tuesday afternoon.

Beeld said it was believed that she shot her son in his bed and smothered her grandson. His body was found in a pram near the bathroom where she tried to hang herself.

Mufamadi said the police were still searching for the toddler’s mother.

This was third family murder in a week.

On Friday, Daniel Olifant (40) of Bloemfontein shot dead his girlfriend, Shirley Scharneck (39), her three children, Zanele (9) Zwelinzima (5) and Thami (13) and himself.

On Monday the bodies of David Theron (58) his wife, Cornel (39) and their daughters, Mikaila (8) and Cara (6) were found shot dead in his bakkie outside their farmhouse in Richmond, in the Northern Cape.
