Grenade man expected in court

A man is expected appear in the Shoshanguve Magistrates Court north of Pretoria tomorrow on charges of murder and attempted murder after a hand grenade was thrown at a group of worshippers blocking a road.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said the 25-year-old man had also been charged with possession of explosives and discharging explosives in a public place.

The Pretoria News reported that the man driving a Volkswagen Golf allegedly lobbed the grenade into a group of Zion Christian Church worshippers who had blocked a road in Shoshanguve as they headed home from all night prayers around 4am yesterday.

According to the report the man had initially been warned by the congregants to slow down, before they unblocked the road to let him pass.He allegedly returned ten minutes later and threw the grenade.

Mangena said that a man, identified as Ephraim Mashishi (38) was killed while seven others were injured.

Two of these were still in hospital this morning.
