If you have been struggling to convert your job interviews into full-time employment, you may have been looking in the wrong areas.

While the country lost nearly a ­million jobs during the recession, the economy is shaping up for a rebound.

In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) artisans, managers and engineers are back in vogue as the economy picks up.

KZN is home to 2.4?million of the country’s 13?million workers, according to Stats SA employment figures for ­December last year.

Manufacturing ranks as the ­province’s major industry. It is followed by financial, real estate and business services.

Wholesale and retail trade, ­hotels and restaurants complete the list of the top three employers in the ­province.

Durban-based managing director Alex Maseko of Emandleni ­Management Consulting gives us an overview of jobs in demand.

Artisans are the most sought after in KZN, the top three being:

»?Instrumentation technicians, ­electricians and fitters

Qualification & Job description

A national diploma (N3) plus a trade test in the relevant discipline for all three is a minimum requirement.

Fitters who are most in demand are those who have heavy industry ­manufacturing experience.

Electricians who have high-speed packaging experience with fast-moving consumer goods stand a good chance of gaining employment in the province.

Salary range

Instrumentation: R16?000 to R26?000 a month plus benefits.

Electricians and fitters: R15?000 to R20?000 a month plus benefits.

» Cost Engineers

Qualification and job description

The best candidates must have ­multi-disciplinary engineering projects experience. Quantity surveying or cost accounting qualifications are ­advantageous.

» Contract Administrators

Qualification and job description

Candidates with multi-disciplinary engineering projects experience are most in demand in the province. ­Quantity surveying, legal or ­commercial ­qualifications add to the appeal of the candidate.

»?Rotating equipment reliability ­engineers

Qualification and job description

A BSc in mechanical engineering will give candidates a chance of an ­interview. Vast engineering rotating equipment experience could land them the job.

Salary range for the three jobs above

This job pays between R60?000 and R70?000 a month.

» Accountant manager – Taxation

Qualification and job description

People who have manufacturing ­experience and are chartered ­accountants who have a higher ­diploma in taxation will net these kinds of jobs.

alary range

This job attracts between R35?000 and R45?000 a month plus benefits.

» Manager: Manufacturing Industry Development Programme (MIDP)

Qualification and job description

Experience with automotive exports or MIDP experience is a requirement for this job. Accounting or commercial qualifications are advantageous.

Salary range

This job pays between R35?000 and R45?000 a month plus benefits.

» Regulatory affairs manager

Qualification and job description

People who have technical ­regulatory affairs and fast-moving ­consumer goods experience have a good chance of securing such jobs. People with engineering, marketing or legal qualifications are more likely to secure the job.

Salary range

These managers can expect to earn between R50?000 to R110?000 a month.

» Project leaders for SAP in IT

Qualification and job description

Companies are looking for people with a BSc computer science ­qualification and an SAP module ­certificate.

Salary range

Companies are prepared to pay ­people with such skills and experience R50?000 a month.
