The ANC says it hopes those who have relationships with its members do not abuse those relationships.

Responding to a question about whether the party was not concerned about President Jacob Zuma’s relationship with the Gupta family, ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said the party hoped that those who have relationships with its members “don’t put those relationships into disrepute”.

He was speaking at a press briefing in Johannesburg about the outcome of a meeting of the ANC national executive committee’s international relations subcommittee today.

The ANC would await the government investigation into how a plane ferrying guests en route to the Gupta family wedding got the permission to land at the Waterkloof military air base last week in violation of the law.

“The ANC has condemned the invasion of our sovereignty. We continue to condemn it ...

“After this investigation has been concluded, as the ANC, we will look at it. All of us have a lot to learn from this debacle so that it doesn’t repeat itself,” he said.

Six government officials were suspending last week in connection with their role in allowing the plane to land at Waterkloof.

ANC international relations subcommittee chairperson Obed Bapela also expressed concern about the decision of the British government to cut its aid to South Africa, worth 22 million British pounds, in 2015. He said the cut would hurt the country’s economic growth.

He said the ANC would discuss the matter with the British government, and said it would also lobby the support of friendly political parties in that country.

The meeting also took a decision to hold a number of events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity, the predecessor to the African Union.
