Asamoah Gyan scored a stoppage time winner to help Ghana edge out Algeria in their Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash.

The Black Stars captain, who returned to the team after missing the opening game with Senegal due to malaria, showed his class when he outpaced Madjid Bougherra and put the ball past goalkeeper Raïs M'Bolhi to bring Ghana back in contention after losing their opening game.

A win over South Africa on Tuesday will give Ghana a passage into the quarterfinals.

It was not one of the entertaining games of the tournament as both sides looked content with a draw.

Although Ghana needed something out of this game, they did not play like men possessed.

The less said about the opening half the better as both sides failed to create scoring chances as the game was concentrated in the middle.

But Ghana stepped up their game in the second stanza as they knew their lives depended on a positive outcome.

Gyan came close to opening the scoring but his header went narrowly wide with M'Bolhi well-beaten.

André Ayew also came close to registering his name on the score sheet but he ballooned his effort.

Algeria also had their chances but their best effort was wasted by Yacine Brahimi.

Then Gyan broke their hearts with a stoppage time winner which has cracked the group of death wide open.
