HIV affecting the economy – Solidarity

2010-12-01 12:39

The high number of HIV-positive workers in South Africa was hurting the economy, trade union Solidarity said on World Aids Day.

“An alarming proportion” of one out of every five workers in the country was likely to be HIV positive, the union said.

The estimate was based on the Actuarial Society of South Africa’s 2003 model, which showed that approximately 19% of the population between the ages of 15 and 49 was living with HIV.

Solidarity’s head of occupational healthy and safety, Paul Mardon, said this trend had a negative impact on the South African economy.

The loss of expertise that arose when people were unable to work as a result of the pandemic placed an additional burden on the economy.

Education about the disease was key, he said.
