Media production company Cut has released a one-minute video showing a century of the most popular hairstyles worn by African-American women. These styles inspired hair culture and trends around the world.

The video, called 100 Years of Beauty: Marshay, shows one woman patiently modelling the hair and accompanying make-up from 1910 to 2010. It focuses specifically on the trend of natural hair (or hair that hasn’t been chemically treated), and takes you on a whirlwind tour of the up-dos of the 40s and the fros of the 70s, to Janet Jackson’s thick braids and the half plaits of the early 2000s. It’s a wonderful celebration of what black hair can do.
