Haiti ‘needs $350 million in immediate aid’

Haiti’s prime minister, visiting Brazil yesterday, said his country

needed $350 million (about R2.6 billion) in emergency funds to begin

reconstruction after the devastating earthquake in January.

Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said his nation would seek $11.5

billion in all to repair the destruction wrought by the 7.0-magnitude quake,

which on January 12 killed more than 220 000 people and left 1.3 million

“We need at least $350 million for children to be able to go back

to school, to provide drinking water to the population and to guarantee security

in the country,” he said. “We’re talking about money that we don’t have.”

“We are now in a state of high dependency and we recognise that,”

he added.

Representatives from governments and international organisations

are to gather in New York at the end of this month for a donors’ conference to

raise funds for reconstruction in the stricken Caribbean nation.
