Harmony: Search for missing miner continues

2014-02-06 15:14

The search for a missing miner at Harmony Gold’s Doornkop mine outside Soweto continues.

“It is our hope that we find the missing miner alive, but the longer it takes to find him, the more difficult it becomes,” Harmony Gold chief executive Graham Briggs has said.

Briggs was speaking at a press briefing at the Harmony Golf offices this morning after eight miners died in a fire last night. Their bodies were located this morning.

Five of the dead miners were from Eastern Cape, one was from Mpumalanga, one from Mozambique and the eighth from Swaziland.

The miners’ identities have been kept confidential as their next of kin are yet to identify them.

The briefing was also attended by Harmony Gold chairperson Patrice Motsepe and Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu.

An investigation into the deaths is under way.
