Headmaster investigated after leaving matric papers on car roof

A box of matric physical science question papers was “accidentally lost” when a Gauteng headmaster put the box on the roof of his car and drove off.

The Gauteng education department says in a statement the headmaster at Phefeni Senior Secondary School, who was also the chief invigilator, has been suspended pending an investigation.

“The chief invigilator, who is the headmaster at Phefeni Senior Secondary School (in Orlando West), was tasked with collecting exam papers from the local nodal point at 7am this morning. When loading his car, he appears to have put the box with exam papers on the roof of the vehicle. He drove off forgetting to put the box inside the vehicle,” said provincial education spokesperson Charles Phahlane.

“An additional set of question papers were sent to the school and after a brief delay, all learners wrote the examination.”

Phahlane said answer papers submitted by learners at four schools in the area will be “quarantined” to establish whether learners had prior knowledge of the paper.

“The exam process remains completely intact,” he said.
