» Doctors less likely to bond with their overweight patients

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US have found that physicians are less likely to bond or have an emotional rapport with their overweight and obese patients than with their patients of normal weight.

Bonding and empathy are essential to the patient-physician relationship. When physicians express more empathy, studies have shown that patients are more likely to adhere to medical recommendations and respond to behaviour-change counselling.

» Coffee may help reduce chances of breast cancer recurrence

Drinking coffee could decrease the risk of breast cancer recurring in patients taking Tamoxifen, according to a study at Lund University in Sweden, published this week. Tamoxifen is a commonly used drug that reduces the risk of breast cancer recurrence.

Researchers followed 600 breast cancer survivors who were taking Tamoxifen over five years.

They found that those who drank two or more cups of coffee daily, reported less than half the rate of cancer recurrence, compared with those who drank one cup or less.

» Psoriasis increases risk of sexual dysfunction in men

Male patients with psoriasis are at increased risk of developing sexual dysfunction, Taiwan researchers have found.

The research was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Psoriasis is a skin disease that occurs when the immune system mistakes a normal skin cell for a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that cause overproduction of new skin cells.
